Bihar para-swimmer Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh won three medals — a gold, a silver, and a bronze — at the 24th National Para Swimming Championship. Held from October 19 to 22, the competition in Goa featured 518 athletes from 28 states.
Shams secured a gold medal in the 200m Individual Medley SM5 category with a time of 4:43:18 and bagged the silver medal in the 100m freestyle S5 category, clocking a time of 1:56:63.
Shams clinched the bronze medal in the 100m butterfly S5 category, finishing the race with a time of 2:11:71. He was among the 12 athletes who represented Bihar at the 24th National Para Swimming Championship.
Only two swimmers from Bihar won medals at the competition. Apart from Shams, Mohit Kumar from Bihar also secured two gold medals at the event.
Reflecting on his success, Shams Aalam was quoted as saying in a press release:
“I believe consistency is the key to success, and that’s what helped me achieve a medal after competing continuously for 12 years since I started in 2012. I am still winning medals, and I strongly believe that consistency plays a very important role in our lives.”

Shams Aalam won the bronze medal in the 100m butterfly S5 category on Day 2 of the competition. He faced severe pain due to an accident during warm-up but gave his best for his state, Bihar.
“On the second day of the competition when I was warming up in the warm-up are, three kids aged around 14-15 suddenly jumped into the pool. One of them accidentally jumped on my back and I faced severe pain but did compete in the race and clocked by best timing.”
